Drought Severity 
Top: Drought severity values by climate divisions for 1998 drought, as of September 12th.
Bottom: Drought severity index for north central Texas by month, Jan. 1949-Oct.1998. Negative values indicate dry conditions and positive values indicate wet conditions.
Extent and Length of Droughts 
Extent and length of four droughts. Maps show the spatial extent and severity of the worst year for each drought. The decade of the drought along with numbers of years of the drought are listed to the right of the maps.
 Evidence of Drought
The locations and types of paleoclimatic evidence for two multidecadal megadroughts is shown on these maps.
Trees = tree-ring data
Tan regions = data from sand dunes
Blue ovals = lake sediment data
Pottery symbol = archaeological data
Stump symbol = evidence from submerged trees
